OMSI 2 Map Installation Tutorial
Welcome to the map installation tutorial. We'll go over the most important things to remember when installing maps and explain the basic folder structure you'll need to use.Introduction
Installing maps is usually a simple process. The actual issues arise when the additional scenery objects and splines aren't in the correct folders. This happens when mods
don't include the required files in most cases.
If this happens, you will need to download the additional files. Maps will usually include a read me file, though some may not. Please note that this doesn't apply to any file you download from OmsiWorld, since we always include the required files. Map Folders
Maps in OMSI 2 usually contain files throughout several folders. These folders include SceneryObjects, Splines, Maps and Texture.
Larger maps may include additional folders, if so they're most likely a copy of the folder name in your OMSI 2 installation dir and can be copied straight over. Let's install a map together
We'll be installing the Great Grundorf map to our OMSI 2 installation. You can either follow along or take a look at how this map in particular is installed, since most
maps will be installed the same way. The picture below is what the downloaded map folder contains. As you can see it contains a maps, Sceneryobjects, Splines and Texture folder.
There are also some additional folders which include Fonts, TicketPacks and Vehicles. These are required because the map uses
specific vehicles and custom ticket packs. The Fonts folder contains fonts for the buses. As we mentioned above some maps contain a read me file in the form of a PDF, this includes information on what to download if the required files aren't bundled in.
Now let's take a look at our OMSI 2 folder. We're showing the folder as it installs using the Steam version of OMSI 2. As you can see, there are many folders here and you may feel a little overwhelmed, but take a look at the folders highlighted in orange. These are the only folders
we need to focus on as the map we're installing does not use any of the other folders.
The recommended method of installing a map is to copy and paste the folders over using your operating system's right click menu. This is the recommended option as it will duplicate the files, not move them. Why is moving them an issue? If you move the folders over, you'll definitely lose track of where the files have all gone, and if you need to reinstall the
map at a later date, you'll have to carefully go through each folder to get the files back. In short, if you're new to installing maps, copy and paste.
Let's copy and paste!
A few moments later... Psst... If you're a whizz-kid you can use CTRL+C/CTRL+V.
Replace or skip duplicate files?
There's a high chance you'll run into this notification, where duplicate files have been discovered and the choice rests in your hands. Do you replace the files or do you skip them? Most of the time, we'd recommend you replace the files to make sure you have the most up to date files. However! If you are installing mods or
modifying files on your own, keep track of what files have been changed as replacing files will overwrite them. Skipping files will not cause any issues, however
if you're updating a map then you may be left with out of date files. Are we finished yet?
Yes! If you followed the guide correctly, then you can run map tools and take a look at the map to see if anything is missing. Awesome! There are 0 missing objects and 0 missing splines, the map should be good to go. Open up your game and load the map!
